ETIAS Guide 2026: What Americans Need to Know Before Traveling to Europe

Where to take pictures in Florence

Welcome to our complete ETIAS guide for 2026. If you’ve been to Europe before, you already know how easy it is as an American. Book your flight, pack your bags, show your passport at the border, and you’re in. No visas, no pre-registration, no paperwork. That has been the reality for decades — and it’s about to change.

Starting in late 2026, Americans traveling to Europe will need to apply for ETIAS before they leave home. Not a visa. Not a lengthy application. Just a quick online pre-authorization that takes about 10 minutes and costs €20. But if you show up at the airport without it, you won’t be boarding that flight.

We want to make sure that doesn’t happen to you. Here is everything you need to know about ETIAS before your next trip to Europe.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. It is a pre-travel authorization program being introduced by the European Union for travelers from countries that currently don’t require a visa to visit Europe — including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Think of it less like a visa and more like ESTA, the system Americans already use when traveling to and from the US. You apply online, get approved, and that authorization is tied to your passport. The whole process is designed to be quick and straightforward.

ETIAS does not change the rules around how long you can stay in Europe. Americans will still be able to visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period — ETIAS just adds a pre-authorization step before you travel.

WHEN DOES ETIAS LAUNCH?

ETIAS is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. The European Union has pushed this launch date back several times, but Q4 2026 is the current confirmed target. We will update this post as soon as an official launch date is announced.

Pro-tip: Even if ETIAS hasn’t officially launched yet, it’s worth checking the official ETIAS website (travel-europe.europa.eu) before booking any travel to Europe in late 2026. The launch date could be confirmed with relatively short notice.

WHICH COUNTRIES REQUIRE ETIAS?

ETIAS applies to the Schengen Area, which covers 29 European countries. Here are the major destinations that American travelers visit most:

  • Greece
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • France
  • Germany
  • Croatia
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Czech Republic
  • Switzerland
  • Austria

Note that the United Kingdom and Ireland are not part of the Schengen Area — see the FAQ below for what that means for your trip.

HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR ETIAS?

The application process is straightforward and entirely online. Here is how it works:

  1. Go to the official ETIAS website at travel-europe.europa.eu. Do not use any third-party site — there are already unauthorized websites charging inflated fees. The official application costs €20, nothing more.
  2. Fill out the online application form. You’ll need your passport, email address, and a credit or debit card. The application asks standard questions about your travel history, health, and any criminal background.
  3. Pay the €20 application fee. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee.
  4. Wait for your authorization. In most cases, ETIAS applications are approved within minutes. In some cases it can take up to 96 hours, and in rare cases up to 30 days if additional review is needed.
  5. Once approved, your ETIAS is linked to your passport electronically. You don’t need to print anything — just travel with the same passport you used to apply.

ETIAS is valid for three years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. That means once you apply, you’re covered for multiple trips to Europe without reapplying.

HOW MUCH DOES ETIAS COST?

The standard ETIAS application fee is €20, which works out to roughly $22 USD at current exchange rates. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee entirely.

HOW LONG DOES ETIAS APPROVAL TAKE?

In the vast majority of cases, ETIAS applications are approved within a few minutes of submission. However, the EU advises applying at least 96 hours before your departure just in case your application requires additional review. We recommend applying at least two weeks before your trip — there is no reason to leave it to the last minute when the application only takes 10 minutes.

WHAT IS THE ENTRY/EXIT SYSTEM (EES)?

Alongside ETIAS, Europe also introduced a separate system called the Entry/Exit System (EES) in late 2025. The EES records biometric data — your fingerprints and a facial scan — at European borders when you enter and exit for the first time.

You don’t need to apply for EES or do anything in advance. It happens automatically at the border on your first entry. What it does mean is that you should expect slightly longer processing times at European border crossings, especially in the first year or two as the system beds in. Budget extra time at the airport on arrival.

DOES ETIAS AFFECT HOW LONG I CAN STAY IN EUROPE?

No. The 90/180 day rule remains unchanged. Americans can spend up to 90 days in the Schengen Area in any 180-day rolling period. ETIAS does not extend or reduce that limit — it simply adds the pre-authorization step before you travel.

If you are planning an extended trip, a digital nomad stint, or slow travel across Europe, you’ll want to track your Schengen days carefully regardless of ETIAS. Our digital nomad trip planner dashboard has a built-in Schengen day tracker to help you stay on the right side of the limit. (Note: URL to be updated when the planner launches.)

OUR TOP TIPS FOR ETIAS

APPLY EARLY. There is no advantage to waiting. ETIAS takes 10 minutes and costs €20. Apply as soon as the system launches and your travel plans are confirmed.

USE ONLY THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE. The official ETIAS application portal is travel-europe.europa.eu. Third-party websites that charge more than €20 are not official — avoid them.

CHECK YOUR PASSPORT EXPIRY DATE. ETIAS is tied to your passport. If your passport expires before or during your trip, renew it first. Passport renewal times in the US have been running several months — do not leave this to the last minute.

APPLY BEFORE BOOKING NON-REFUNDABLE FLIGHTS. Once ETIAS launches, we recommend applying for your authorization before putting down non-refundable money on flights or accommodation. Applications are approved quickly in most cases, but it’s good practice.

ONE ETIAS PER PERSON. Every traveler on your trip needs their own ETIAS tied to their own passport — including children.

Frequently asked questions about ETIAS

Do Americans need a visa to travel to Europe?

No — Americans do not need a visa for short stays in Europe. ETIAS is not a visa. It is a pre-travel authorization that will be required from Q4 2026 for stays of up to 90 days in the Schengen Area.

How long is ETIAS valid?

Three years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. One ETIAS covers unlimited trips to Europe during that period.

Which European countries don’t require ETIAS?

The United Kingdom and Ireland are not part of the Schengen Area and will not require ETIAS. However, the UK has its own equivalent system already in effect. The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) has been mandatory for Americans since February 25, 2026. It costs £20, takes a few minutes to apply for online, is valid for two years, and allows stays of up to 6 months per visit. Apply through the official UK government app or at gov.uk/eta — do not use third-party sites. Ireland does not currently require any pre-authorization for American travelers.

Can my ETIAS application be denied?

Yes, though it is rare. If your application is denied, you will be told the reason and given the opportunity to appeal. Reasons for denial include prior criminal history, a flagged travel history, or inconsistencies in your application.

Is ETIAS the same as ESTA?

They’re similar in concept. ESTA is the US system for pre-authorizing international travelers visiting America. ETIAS is the European equivalent for non-EU visitors. Same idea, different destination.
